Field Day Field Day Volunteers NeededField day is a fun-filled event for the entire school that would not be possible without the help of our wonderful parents, grandparents and family friends! For many students, this is the highlight of their school year. The only way to make this popular event a success is with volunteers.

Reading News
We are focusing on different book Series. Series readers become experts on the characters in the series. They do this by collecting information on the main characters. Series readers also pay attention to how the characters respond to problems in the story. Series readers compare books across the series and notice things that are the SAME. It is important to think about what the characters say and do so that series readers can get to know the characters. They will use what they know to guess what the character will do next. It is also important to notice what a character's relationships show.

Poetry
We have started writing poetry!! This is a fun unit because we get to play with the English language and "break" some typical punctuation rules that we have used in other forms of writing! We have practiced seeing different everyday objects through "Poets' Eyes". For example, we have an electric pencil sharpener in our rooms but a poet might see it as a machine with hundreds of bees buzzing inside it until the pencil is sharp! One way to become a better poet is to read more poetry and see how the different poets play with line breaks and words!

Social Studies/Science
We have been studying SOIL! The three main components of soil are sand, clay, and humus. We got a chance to perform a variety of tests on each different component. We observed each one dry, and wet. Each component has a distinct color when dry and wet. We have tried to roll a ball with each component when it was wet. Only one component makes a good strong ball- ask us which one!! We also did a settling test. Each component reacted differently. One of the components never fully settled in the water because it has organic material in it- ask us which one!!
